How to sew Cotton Jersey Fabric?
Here are 5 tips to get the best results from your next cotton jersey project!
1. Use the right needle: Opt for a ballpoint or stretch needle. These needles have a rounded tip which slips between the fabric threads instead of piercing them, preventing damaging the fibres.
2. Pattern weights and Rotary Cutter: Instead of pinning, which can cause the fabric to stretch out of shape, use pattern weights to hold your pattern pieces in place and a rotary cutter for more precise cuts.
3. Choose the right thread: A polyester thread is ideal because it has more stretch than cotton thread. It complements the elasticity of the fabric and prevents seams from breaking when it stretches. Our Gutermann Maraflex Elastic Stretch Thread is a great choice for Cotton Jersey!
4. Adjust your machine's settings: Lower the tension on your sewing machine to avoid puckering. Also, use a narrow zigzag stitch or a special stretch stitch if your machine has it. This allows the seam to stretch with the fabric without snapping.
5. Press gently: When pressing cotton jersey, use a low heat setting and minimal pressure to avoid stretching or distorting the fabric. A pressing cloth can also be helpful to protect the fabric.
