How to sew Cotton Jersey Fabric?
Cotton Jersey is a soft and versatile fabric that is perfect for tops, children's clothing and much more.
Here are 5 tips to get the best results from your next project!
1. Use a Stretch Needle: Stretch needles have a rounded tip that slides between the fibres of the fabric without damaging them, reducing the chances of skipped stitches or fabric snags.
2. Pre-wash: Cotton jersey can shrink, so it's essential to pre-wash and pre-shrink your fabric before sewing.
3. Use a Stretch Stitch: Set your sewing machine to a stretch stitch, such as a narrow zigzag stitch or a stretch stitch if your machine has one. These stitches allow the seam to stretch with the fabric without breaking.
4. Finish Seams Appropriately: Consider finishing your seams with a serger/overlock machine, zigzag stitch or a stretch stitch to add durability to your garment.
5. Choose the Right Thread: Opt for a polyester thread as it has some stretch and will move with the fabric better than cotton thread. Our Gutermann Maraflex Stretch Thread is a great pairing for Cotton Jersey fabric!
